[Anomalies]

Over time, there have been a few conspicuous anomalies that have showed up in the series. The main ones have been the silly attacks and defences that never occur again; Goku's pinwheel flight that propels him back into the budoukai ring; a whirlwind punch; and Piccolo's growing to 400 feet tall.

Sensu seeds take a certain time to harvest, and there only seem to be a small handful at any given time. But, near the Cell game, the group keeps getting as many of the seeds as they need at the moment.

#18 gets her old clothes back, without any explanation, on page 71, volume 31. It's to be assumed that she stole them in a large city.

The entire idea of Saiyan having tails is inconsistant. Goku's gets cut off a couple times, and it grows back. But, when Vejeta and Gohan lose theirs, the tails are gone for good. Trunks was supposedly born with a tail, which Vejeta removed early on -- but it's not shown in the manga.

Gravity training, and the Room of Spirit and Time: In volume 31, Piccolo states that Goku was only able to stay in the room for one month, in the past. The only time this could have happened is during the 3-year period in volume 14 when Goku was training under Kami. The Room has gravity 10 times Earth-normal -- this supposedly helps people improve faster. However, when Goku dies later, and goes to King Kai's planet, he acts like he's never been subjected to abnormal gravity before. Ie. -- Toriyama has rewritten Goku's training history, and overlooked this contradiction.

The title page for chapter 367 shows the evolution of Dr. Gero's androids.

#1 - 7: Faceless failures.
#8: was a kindhearted creature that became Goku's friend, and therefore was a failure.
#9 - 15: Failures.
#13 - 15 were very close to being completed.

#16: Very little is known, but Dr. Gero says he's a failure. It might be his personality, but there may be other things wrong, too. (Machine base)

#17: He was too strong, and therefore a failure. (Human base.)

#18: Not as strong as #17, but she didn't listen to Dr. Gero, and was therefore a failure. (Human base.)

#19: Finally, success. But, is killed by Vejita. (Machine base.)

#20: He made himself into a cyborg. Is killed by #17. (Part machine, part human base.)

Cell: Dr. Gero wanted to create a cyborg with bio-technology. But, he couldn't do it in the time he had, so he left the job to his computer. Cell was made up of a combination of cells from Goku, Vejeta, Piccolo, Frieza, and Frieza's father. From this body, if he merges with #17 and #18, he would become perfect.

Gohan | Piccolo | Trunks | Vegeta | Goku | The Story

[VOLUME 28:End of Frieza Saga/Trunks appears]

Goku rushes towards Freeza, closely followed by the cutting energy ball. Freeze yells that this is an old trick. The ball apparently kills Goku, but the hero had used an image, and is standing off to the side. Goku insults Frieza, basically saying that the alien can only handle a limited amount of power. So Frieza creates two cutting balls to prove that he can. The same chase pattern occurs, but this time, as he approaches Frieza, Goku shoots a blast to raise a cloud of dust(Goku had easlier noticed Frieza couldn't sense someone in a cloud of dust). Cursing, Frieza leaps out of the way of the first disk, but is smashed down into the path of the second. Goku warns him to not stand up, but it's too late.

Frieza anguishes and shows anger, then begs for help. Goku, turning to leave for his ship, pauses. King-Kai yells for Goku to not listen to the pleas. Then, Goku shouts that he's not going to help this kind of killer. Frieza begs one more time, and Goku actually gives him enough power to move on his own again.

Back on Earth, the Nameks are chattering, but one elder notices that one village hasn't shown up yet. Vejeta answers that that's probably the one he destroyed. The wish had been to bring back the people killed by Frieza, and Vejeta had killed that Namekian village. The old Dragon Balls also land, and Elder Namek says that after he dies, the new Elder should make a new set of Dragon Balls. The group agrees to this, and then the old Namek dies permanently. Piccolo gives his farewells, and Dende asks if Piccolo and Nail are now the same person (Piccolo just smiles.)

Bulma asks where Goku and Krillin are, and Gohan answers that Krillin had died, and that he'd last seen his father fighting Frieza. Piccolo comments on this, and Bulma asks why Krillin wasn't resurrected with everyone else. Gohan explains that Krillin had died once already, and Dende overhears this. But, that restriction, on not bringing the same person back to life twice, doesn't apply if the Namek Balls are used for the second resurrection. There is much rejoicing ofcourse. Then, Piccolo complains about how stupid Goku is, but Gohan is convinced that the Super Saiyan will win. Vejeta wakes up at the mention of "Super Saiyan."

Back on Namek, Frieza is still giving Goku a hard time. They talk a bit about getting off the planet, where the ships are, and so on. But, Frieza is a bad loser, and tries one last time to kill Goku. This fails, and Goku's counter blast finishes off the alien. On King Kai's planet, King Kai is relaying what happened, but also adds that Goku won't escape in time. Yamcha answers that since Goku is a Super Saiyan, he still has a chance, so King Kai starts chanting for Goku to hurry. Goku reaches Frieza's ship, and begs for it to work. Frantically looking for the start button, he does find it, but the ship doesn't react. He anguishes, then rushes outside to watch the ship fall into a crevice. King Kai relays what's happening, as Goku realises that the planet is about to explode and he screams out. Yamcha yells for Goku to not die, and then Namek explodes.

King Kai can't sense the planet, or Goku anymore. Yamcha volunteers to talk to Bulma and to tell Gohan what's happened, using King Kai as a channel. He explains what's happening, and then Bulma has to do the same for Gohan. She asks how Yamcha is doing, and he answers "as well as can be expected for a dead guy (more or less.)" He tells her that Goku had defeated Frieza (this surprises Vejita,) and tries to say that the hero had died in the explosion, but Bulma interrupts and tells him to quit joking. He yells back at her that it's the truth. Then, Bulma replies that Yamcha doesn't know that the Nameks on Earth can recreate their Dragon Balls, which can bring back Chiao-tzu, Krillin, AND Goku. However, King Kai informs them that although those people can be brought back to life, there'd be no place for them to return to, (ie. Goku and Krillin would appear where Namek had been, and would just die again shortly after.)

Gohan panicks a little at hearing that his father and Krillin can never be resurrected, and Bulma says that at least the others can be. Vejeta speaks up condescendingly, and states that the obvious thing is to wish for the remains of the two fighters to be brought to Earth, first. Bulma tells him that he's ok after all, and Gohan tries to thank Vejeta, but the Saiyan just wants to meet a Super Saiyan, and then defeat him. This is when one of the Namek elders steps in and says that before they create the Balls, they need a nice place to set up camp. Bulma volunteers some land near the space in the city where she lives, and she extends the offer to Vejeta (who accepts it with his normal grace, muttering that she has a big mouth.) Next, she asks everyone to wait while she goes to the nearby house to call for her father to come get them. Gohan asks to stay at Capsule Corp. as well, because he'd forgotten to study his homework and Chi Chi is going to be mad at him. The air bus comes and takes everyone to Bulma's place in the western district. Vejeta, too.

130 days later, the Balls have been reactivated, and the Namekian Dragon appears outside of the Capsule Corp. HQ. Bulma and her father are impressed at the dragon's size. Shenlon (Dragon) asks for the first wish, and the new Elder states that the Namek will wait for a while, so the Earthling's can make all three wishes. Gohan thanks him. Bulma wishes for the remains of Goku and Krillin to be brought back to Earth. The dragon answers that Krillin is a go, but since Goku is still alive, he doesn't have any remains to be teleported. Neither Gohan or King Kai can believe this. Gohan suggests that maybe his father had found a space ship. Buruma then wishes for Krillin to be brought back to life (he is very surprised.) As a free service, Shenlon had fixed Kuririn's clothes and healed his wounds, as well. Buruma says that the dragon may have a scarey face, but he does good work.

For the third wish, Buruma shouts out to have Goku brought to Earth. There's some cheering. Then, Shenlon answers that since Goku is already on his way home under his own power, the wish can't be fulfilled. Master Roshi yells out for a nicer bride for Goku, then has to quickly add that he's just joking. (Piccolo notes that while Goku is alive, King Kai couldn't locate him.) So, the third wish is to have Yamcha resurrected. Another 130 days later, Tien and Chiao-tzu are resurrected together. The third wish of the second set is for the discovery of a new planet for the Namekians.

One year has passed. Gohan is wondering what's happened to his father. The phone wakes him up and it's Krillin. Everyone now notices the presence of a stupendous power. King Kai hopes that it isn't Frieza [NOTE: Vejeta is spending the day at Capsule Corp., with Yamcha and Bulma, having a BBQ.] Seems that Kakarot hadn't finished the job after all. Tien realizes that there's at least 2 strong people approaching.

On the spaceship, the cyborg Frieza tells his father that this is the planet called Earth. King Cold (papa) thinks that it's a little planet that will only take one blast to blow up. Gohan flies off, with Chi Chi asking where he's going. He meets up with Krillin, and they discuss the evil that's getting closer. The ship is about to land, and Vejeta thinks that he and Yamcha are at the contact point. Yamcha calls Bulma an idiot when she shows up. They argue, but since Frieza can blow up Namek, there is no safe place to hide on Earth, so she came to watch the fight. Tien and Chiao-tzu arrive, and the triclops wants to know why his killer has come to the battlezone. Tien wants to kill Frieza, and Yamcha has to calm things down. Vejeta tells them to argue later, there's fighting to be done, and Frieza is going to have his scouter back. The Saiyan then comments that the Namekian is here, and people now notice Piccolo. Krillin and Gohan now locate the others.

They exchange greetings, and Piccolo shouts that the ship is coming. Gohan says that this really is Frieza, and Vejeta wants to know if everyone can fly (to cover distance.) Yamcha panicks at realizing that Frieza is this strong. Tien and Yamcha can't believe that the others had actually fought this monster. Vejeta mocks them, adding that Earth is about to end. Frieza comes out of the ship, and thinks that Earth rather nice. Cold decides that they'll wait 3 hours for the Super Saiyan to show up. Then they'll have some fun and kill everyone. Yamcha curses the fact that Frieza is still alive. Frieza orders his men to kill all of the Earthlings, and then a strange boy sets foot on the battlegrounds.

Frieza asks the boy what he wants, and the kid replies "to kill the lot of you." Frieza repeats this, and asks if the kid knows who he is. The kid does. The alien doesn't know how this is possible, but he orders one of his soldiers to kill the 'brat'. According to the creature's scouter, this Earthling runt has a power rating of 5. All of the soldiers subsequently die to this 'weakling', which overwhelms the Z fighters, and amuses Frieza and Cold. The kid says it's now their turn. They banter a bit, and the boy states that he's come to meet Goku; Frieza recognizes the name. They banter some more, and the kid says that Goku isn't the only Super Saiyan now. Freeza and Cold are stunned as the boy powers up. The humans are trying to figure out where this power has come from, and Gohan recognizes it as being like his father's, at the end of the fight. Frieza attacks, Cold praises him, the boy avoids the blast. He makes some strange hand gestures, yells out "Frieza" and fires. Gohan points out where the action is happening, and Frieza gets diced around before being vaporized.

Krillin and Vejeta stammer a bit, and Bulma can't follow any of the action at all, but atleast they have been saved by what looks like Goku. Yamcha states that this isn't Goku at all. The group gets closer to watch the action. Cold praises the boy's technique in killing his child, and asks to see the kid's sword. The kid hesitates, and Cold asks if something's wrong. With the blade in his hands, Cold admits that something like this could make someone undefeatable. Cold attacks with the sword, the boy catches it in one hand and moves the other for another blast as Cold yells out for him to wait. Cold dies, and the alien ship is destroyed.

The kid invites everyone to wait with him for Goku's arrival. The group is surprised by this, and Vejeta is trying to figure out where yet another Saiyan could have come from. The group decides that the kid can't be all bad, and they take him up on his offer. The kid finds the right coordinates (573 by 18220.) He lands, the others follow suit. He uses a capsule to make a little cooler, and since there's 3 hours left to wait, he offers them something to drink. Bulma, Gohan, and Krillin accept. [NOTE: Vejeta is wearing a white button-down work shirt with "BADMAN" written on the back.]

Bulma asks if they've met before, and Gohan wants to know how the kid knows his father (heard of him, never met him.) They ask him: How do you know Goku will arrive here in 3 hours; What's your name; Where are you from; -- all are answered with "Sorry, I can't tell you that." Vejeta wants to know how the kid can be a Super Saiyan (since there are only 3 Saiyan left) and is met with silence. Bulma finally notices the Capsule Corp. jacket, and asks if he's an employee (It's another secret.) He does say that he's 17 years old. The group splits up, and kills time. Bulma notices the interaction between the mysterious kid and Vejeta. Vejeta wants to know why the kid keeps staring at him, and gets an embarrassed apology. People wonder to each other about this strange kid.

[Volume 29]

[NOTE: Hitoshi's TV series summaries start at episode 122 of Dragon Ball Z, which begins with volume 28 of the manga. So, I'm just going to include the personae lists here, up to volume 33]

New Characters:
#17 -- The young male android created by Dr. Gero. In Trunk's future, #17 and 18 both terrorize Earth, and destroy everyone before travelling to the past to kill Vejeta and the rest of the heroes. Wears a Red Ribbon jersey, torn jeans, and a yellow scarf. Has earrings and shoulder-length black hair. VERY strong. Is consumed by Cell in a later volume.

#18 -- Female android companion to #17. Is also consumed by Cell, but later gets spit back out, and turned more normal. Settles down with Krillin and has his baby.

Super Saiyan Vejiea -- After training in Capsule Corp's 300 g gravity room, Vejea has achieved his dream. Now has blond hair when in Super mode. Still has the same bad attitude, and the selfish desire to bee the strongest person in the universe.

[Volume 30]

New Characters:
#16: The tall, muscular, red-eyed male android created by Dr. Gero. He does not exist in Trunk's future. Gero is afraid of #16, and doesn't want him activated. Gets destroyed by Cell.

First-Stage Cell: Created by Gero in Trunk's alternate future, for the sole purpose of destroying Goku. Cell kills Trunks and takes the time machine, and arrives four years before the appearance of #19 and #20. He has samples of many of the Z Fighters' DNA, and will become complete after consuming #17 and #18. Kind of a humanoid lizard with a stinger tail.

Other notes:
The Z Fighters: This is a term, as far I can tell, coined by Hitoshi Doi (at least, he's the first person I know who used it,) to describe everyone on Goku's side, including Gohan, Krillin, Yamcha, Tien, Chiao-Tzu, Piccolo, and Vejeta.

[Volume 31]

New Characters:
Super Namekian Piccolo: Combined with Kami, Piccolo is faster and stronger. Physically the same.

Second-Stage Cell: After consuming #17, Cell looks a little more human, and is a lot more powerful.

Super Saiyan Vejeta: Stronger, but not much different.

Super Saiyan Trunks: Stronger than Vejeta, and doesn't use his sword anymore.

Other notes:
The Room of Spirit and Time: This is the room at Kami's location (at the top of Karin Tower) where 1 year inside equals 24 hours of real time. The gravity is 10 times Earth's, and the air is 1/4 Earth's density. In here, when a Saiyan trains, the Saiyan's rage can cause him to reach the next level of power (ie -- from a Super Saiyan to an Ultra Super Saiyan or Super Saiyan II) Normally, there is a house (normally equipt) which is surrounded by white space as far as one can see. The white-space area is about the size of Earth. Lastly, there is a 48 hour time-limit on the Room; if someone stays inside longer, the door disappears and that person becomes trapped. Originally, no one was ever able to last a full year in the room, but Trunks, Vejeta, and Piccolo all last that long while training for the Cell Game. In fact, Vejeta returns to the room several times over the 9 days prior to the Cell Game. (The first time, Goku could only last 1 month, the second time, he and Gohan only need to be in the room for about 10 months.)

Super Saiyan: This was supposedly a legendary power level. The last time this had happened was on the Saiyan planet, 1000 years before. Then, Goku, Vejeta, and Trunks all become Super Saiyan within a couple of years. With volume 31, comes the introduction of the idea that the heroes can go beyond Super Saiyan to become something else. (Ultra Super Saiyan, I guess.)

[Volume 32]

New Characters:
Third-stage Cell: After consuming #18, Cell becomes complete. He has Piccolo's ability to regenerate himself, Goku's teleport and Kamehame-ha, the cyborg's power levels, and the ability to easily destroy the planet. However, while he'd been programmed to fight Goku, he considers that irrelevent now. He wants the chance to prove himself stronger than anyone else before killing everyone. So, he declares the "Cell Game," and waits for Goku to exit the Room of Spirit and Time.

Kamicollo: Gokuu's name for the combined Piccolo/Kami

Combat techniques:
Hell's Flash: #16's energy blast attack, fired from his forearms.

Shin-Kikou-hou: Tien's self-killing energy attack, with 'shin' in front of it (shin == new.)

Other notes:
Robot Controller: Originally, Dr. Gero had built a remote control unit intended for destructing #17 and #18 if either of the two ever got out of hand. However, #17 destroyed the controller shortly after being activated. Bulma and her father succeeded in building a new unit, which they give to Krillin. But, he has to be within 10 meters of the robots for the controller to work.

Super Saiyan: Saiyan, since they are not normal Earthlings, don't age and grow quite like everyone else. When they become Super Saiyan, their hair pretty much stops growing altogether.

[Volume 33]

New Characters:
Super Saiyan Gokuu: Probably stronger than Trunks, but not much more.

Super Saiyan Gohan: Stronger than everyone, with a crackling white aura. Can defeat the Third-Stage Cell, but only when he becomes angry enough. Still doesn't like to fight, but has enough Saiyan blood that it can overpower him.

Other notes:
Master Roshi states that in the first budoukai, Goku had lost to Jackie; 5 years later, Goku lost to Tien; 3 years after, Goku beat Piccolo. These dates don't match up with those gathered from earlier volumes, and Master Roshi also says that there hadn't been a Tenkaichi-budoukai since then. This contradicts the idea that the Budoukai is a consistent event that takes place every 3 years. However, this information is unique to the TV series, and is not to be taken seriously.

Earth's New Dragon Balls: Piccolo can not separate to allow Kami to reactivate the Earth's Dragon Balls, so Dende becomes the Guardian. The Dragon Balls created by Dende are the same size as the old ones, but can now grant 2 wishes, while still resurrecting whole groups of people per wish. They also show up on Bulma's Dragon Radar.

Emperor: The dog that was the world's ruler during the fight with Demon King Piccolo, is still in charge during the Cell Game. He remembers the young Goku, and recognizes Ma Junior on TV.

Driving: In the TV series, one episode is dedicated to Piccolo and Goku learning to drive. This does not happen in the manga. In fact, on page 96, Goku is shown to be at least a competent driver.

Clothing: On page 146, the Z Fighters are shown in a group. Tien has kept his clothing in the same style, having rejected the option of wearing the same outfit as his killer, Vejeta. Vejeta and Trunks both wear the modified Saiyan combat suits that Bulma created. Krillin still has the fighting uniform that shows he's a student of Roshi, and Goku has returned to the same style, but no longer has a kanji on it. Gohan respects his former teacher Piccolo a LOT, and wants to wear an identical outfit.

Story: (Hitoshi's summaries end just before the end of the volume.) Cell has batted Mister Satan out of the ring, and Goku is stepping in. The announcer is panicking, and asks Satan to comment on having lost. The pro wrestler says that he slipped. The two argue over the fate of the Earth, and Vejeta is stunned at realizing that Satan's power level hadn't changed at all -- in fact, Vejeta can't believe that the idiot who has absolutely no power at all is called the World's Champion.
